RES designed and constructed this large wetland mitigation bank on 545 acres of land in Chesapeake, Virginia, adjacent to the historic Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge (GDSNWR). In fact, the intent of this bank, upon closure, is to be incorporated into the existing GDSNWR under the jurisdiction of the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
Design for this site included a mixture of wetland restoration, enhancement and preservation; drained forest restoration; and preservation of upland areas.
The Chesapeake Wetland Mitigation Bank site received River Star recognition from the Elizabeth River Project for its significant achievements in pollution prevention and wildlife habitat enhancement. To date, RES has created/restored more than 114 acres of wetlands on these sites, which entailed the planting of over 50,000 trees. RES currently performs ecological success criteria monitoring and reporting to the USACE and the DEQ.
