In 2017, the Maryland Department of Transportation, State Highway Administration (SHA) selected RES to perform Full Delivery Stream Restoration Services on multiple sites throughout the state. Under this contract, RES fully delivered more than 22,000 linear feet of stream restoration at 6 private land sites throughout the state. For each project, RES was responsible for site selection, land acquisition, survey, design, permitting, construction, monitoring, and adaptive management to support the SHA’s Chesapeake Bay restoration goals. RES’ six projects were located in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, and Frederick Counties.

Exemplary of RES’ design and construction versatility, site-specific restoration approaches were determined by each site’s conditions and implementation feasibility. Across the six projects, RES designed and constructed projects utilizing Natural Channel Design and Integrated Floodplain Wetland approaches, as well as hybrid approaches utilizing techniques from both NCD and IFW, determined on a site-by-site basis.

Site design is a team effort, with designs provided by RES’ in-house stream designers and engineers as well as from staff of our partner firms. This collaborative team provided oversight during construction to ensure project components were built according to approved plans.

Stream construction tasks consisted of mobilization, erosion and sediment control installation, clearing and grubbing, maintenance of streamflow, rock/log structure installation, riffle grade control installation, bank stabilization matting, seeding, and planting.
