RES was competitively awarded this construction initiative commissioned by Fairfax County. The initiative focuses on enhancing the area upstream of a state-regulated dam near Tysons Corner. The project involved extensive stream restoration over approximately 1,200 linear feet to mitigate the impact of stormwater from a highly impervious watershed prone to flash flooding.
The site presented several challenges, including susceptibility to flash flooding and persistent water retention due to its high-runoff location. A significant 54-inch waterline heightened operational complexities, requiring meticulous coordination to avoid disruptions. Environmental considerations such as selective tree clearing and constant groundwater infiltration demanded careful planning and execution.
The scope of work included stream restoration tied into a large concrete pad designed to facilitate future maintenance access at the dam embankment. RES subcontracted concrete work necessary for long-term infrastructure support to WG Construction. The project also featured an ambitious reforestation initiative and a strategy for managing non-native plants to restore and enhance the local ecosystem.
The project adhered to the highest environmental and engineering standards. Its efforts not only addressed the immediate environmental and infrastructural challenges but also enhanced the area’s resilience and ecological health, setting a benchmark for sustainable watershed management and maintenance in Fairfax County.
