Tazewell County has partnered with RES to deliver a forward-looking portfolio of resiliency projects designed to reduce flood risks, enhance public safety, and strengthen critical infrastructure throughout the region. Supported by Virginia’s Community Flood Preparedness Fund (CFPF), the program builds on the 2023 Tazewell County Resiliency Plan, a countywide assessment led by RES and Stantec, which identified nature-based, community-driven solutions for flood-prone areas.

Each project addresses a distinct local challenge while contributing to a shared vision of a safer, more resilient Tazewell.

• Richlands School Area Stormwater Improvement Project

  At the heart of the Richlands community, this project is addressing chronic flooding near schools and neighborhoods by enhancing stormwater channels, expanding culvert capacity, and implementing green infrastructure that naturally slows and filters runoff before it reaches downstream systems.

• Bluefield Stormwater and Drainage Enhancements

  In Bluefield, RES is modernizing outdated drainage infrastructure to improve stormwater flow and protect roads, homes, and businesses from frequent high-water events. The design combines engineered upgrades with natural floodplain functions for long-term performance and sustainability. These restoration projects will also be incorporated into the Town’s Park Masterplan, creating recreation benefits such as nature trails and open-water features that double as flood storage.

• North Tazewell Flood Reduction and Debris Management

  To address debris buildup and recurring stream blockages, RES is restoring local waterways through targeted debris removal, bank stabilization, and riparian replanting. The result: improved conveyance, cleaner water, and stronger natural buffers against future storms.

• Claypool Hill Flood Resilience Study

  In the Claypool Hill area, RES is conducting a comprehensive flood study to better understand local hydrology and identify practical, cost-effective strategies such as new detention basins and stormwater retrofits that safeguard public assets and maintain emergency access during severe weather events.

Together, these initiatives reflect Tazewell County’s commitment to a proactive, nature-based approach to community resilience, turning lessons from past floods into opportunities for a safer and more sustainable future.
