Trinity Island is located in the group of islands known as the Isle Dernieres Barrier Island Refuge. Known by locals as “Last Island,” Trinity Island is one of 4 islands making up this land formation along with Wine Island, Whiskey Island, and Raccoon Island. These islands were permanently transferred to Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) in June of 1992 as a refuge. Though these islands have taken on significant erosion from years of wave energy and storm activity in the Gulf of Mexico, they remain a vital asset as erosion protection from the mainland and estuaries along the Southeast Louisiana coast.

Our team was hired to install vegetation along the coastline of Trinity Island. The newly established vegetation will protect and armor habitat from future erosion. This restoration effort is one of many to sustain this crucial waterbird nesting habitat. LDWF regards Trinity Island and Raccoon Island as the most important waterbird nesting areas along the coast. The habitat is also vital to aquatic species. This project was successfully completed in 2021.
