The Beaver Tail Stream and Wetland Mitigation Project, located in Lincoln County, North Carolina, approximately six miles northwest of Lincolnton, is a transformative ecological restoration initiative. This project focuses on restoring 4,506 linear feet of stream and enhancing the wetland ecosystem across a 315-acre drainage area. Specific goals include creating 4.27 acres of wetlands, enhancing 1.31 acres, re-establishing 0.22 acres, and preserving 2.47 acres of wetlands. These efforts aim to significantly improve water quality and provide substantial ecosystem uplift.
The aquatic resources within the project area have experienced severe degradation over time due to insufficient riparian buffers, unrestricted cattle access, agricultural practices, and historical stream modifications. Currently, the streams and wetlands within the area are functioning well below their ecological potential.
The project site includes a tributary flowing directly into Howards Creek and a large segment of the floodplain and riparian area along the left bank of Howards Creek. Since at least 1950, the area has been used for agricultural production, including row cropping and livestock activities, contributing to poor water quality, unstable streambanks, and reduced wetland functionality.
Construction for the Beaver Tail Project is scheduled to begin in March 2025. The goal is to restore and enhance the area’s ecological integrity and long-term sustainability.
