Natural Resource RestorationEcological Setting
Coastal SystemsRES led both the restoration and construction of 6,070 linear feet of protective dune system on Follets Island in the Lower Galveston Bay Watershed. Designed as critical natural infrastructure, the project strengthens coastal resilience, enhances habitat, and provides long-term flood protection benefits to surrounding communities.
Building natural infrastructure
The dune system was constructed using 100% biodegradable materials, reinforcing the shoreline while allowing natural coastal processes to continue shaping and strengthening the landscape over time. By prioritizing Nature-based Solutions (NbS), the project delivers durable protection without relying on hard structural barriers.
Native vegetation and habitat enhancement
RES installed 33,500 native dune plant plugs representing five native species selected for their ability to stabilize dunes and thrive in this coastal environment. The restored dunes provide critical habitat with strong potential to support shorebird nesting and other coastal wildlife, contributing to ecosystem resilience across the watershed.
Delivering results
Through in-house expertise and self-performance capabilities, RES delivered a high-quality, sustainable dune restoration project that enhances storm protection, supports biodiversity, and reinforces the long-term health of the Texas Gulf Coast.
